[ Since Mammon put up stockings as if Santa was genuinely going to come visit their dream selves in an entirely different world, Satan felt obligated to not disappoint him. After all, Santa generally doesn't visit demons since they're... well, demons instead of good little boys and girls.
Satan prepares a few small gifts to put in Mammon's stocking. The first gift comes in two separate boxes. Both boxes are filled with candies made from various herbs from Songerein. The boxes are labeled "from Satan" with one box labeled "sweet" and the other "spicy."
The second gift is a golden scarf, also from Satan. Nothing fancy about it, just a common scarf, but the color is nice and one that Satan knows Mammon likes.
The third and final gift is a small box that feels quite heavy. This one is labelled as "from Santa Claus." Inside, Mammon will discover a hefty amount of Grimm in both paper and coin form. In truth, Satan figures this is the gift Mammon will like best. Grimm is no good here, and at least this way Mammon might feel like he has some money. Even if he can't really use it here, Mammon will still have it. ]
[ After a long day out and about with research sprinkled in here and there, Satan was honestly eager to come back home even without the temptation of a surprise. However, this was surprise that apparently sounded like a cat and Satan was incapable of passing up something like that.
He swears that if Mammon was lying, he will dig a hole in the forest and dump Mammon's deceased body in there.
Regardless, roughly two hours after Mammon tempts Satan with a supposed meow-making friend, Satan finally opens the door to their treehouse. ]
[ It's been almost a month and Satan is still asleep. Although Zelda has been busy much of the month with Link settling in and her divine powers suddenly resurfacing, she's still made time to swing by the demon brothers' treehouse a few times. She wasn't worried for the first week or so, knowing that this is a thing that happens to dream walkers from time to time, but now she's getting pretty concerned.
So she'll come by during the evening with a care basket for Mammon, complete with a home cooked meal by the princess herself. It's even pretty tasty, if Zelda does say so herself! With instructions to Link to wait outside, she manages to climb up to the treehouse with her basket in tow and knock on the door. ]
[ The first time she knocks at the door, she'll hear nothing but silence on the other side. Perhaps she might think no one was there?? It's always possible. But if she knocks again, she'll hear a groan in the background. Maybe even the sound of a couple bottles toppling over to the floor. It'll be a few minutes before finally the door opens to reveal Mammon, black circles under his eyes, hair looking an absolute mess. The works. ]
[ Indeed, Zelda won't be deterred by the door not being answered after the first knock. She'll wait a few seconds, what she thinks is ample time for Mammon to answer the door, before knocking again—harder this time, in case he didn't hear. Not unlike a pushy salesperson who wants you to switch your home internet, Zelda will continue to rap on the door until she is acknowledged. ]
Good evening, Mammon. [ She says brightly. Then she gets a better look at him and her expression immediately darkens with worry. Wow, he looks terrible. ] I thought you might like a home cooked meal for dinner.
[ A good little squash. Mammon frowns softly, almost feeling guilty when he sees the excitement leave her face. He reached out, obnoxiously ruffling her hair. ]
[ Their sleep schedules are more or less complete opposites. He knows he can't sneak into Mammon's room at midnight -- Mammon will be awake, and he's not giving his gifts to him in person. It's different when they're all giving their brothers gifts on their birthdays, so it's embarrassing when it's just him.
Early in the morning, around 6am or 7am, he puts his stealth skills to use, listening to make sure he doesn't hear Mammon before he leaves his bedroom. Nope, no Mammon here. Good.
He has some time, so before he sneaks into Mammon's room, he spends some time in the kitchen. He bakes a cake first, since he wasn't about to bake it last night when Mammon would know what he was doing. In fact, Satan did a very good job of pretending he had absolutely no idea Mammon's birthday was tomorrow -- well, today, now.
When the cake is finished, he checks to make sure that they have enough ingredients to make a good breakfast -- but he'll make it later, when Mammon is actually awake, so it doesn't go cold.
Preparations complete, he silently slips into Mammon's room. He places his gifts on Mammon's night stand: first, seven cute figures of the them and their brothers, which he lines up in a way so that they will hopefully creep Mammon out when he wakes up. There are two more figures as well: Lilith, which he had Certain Feelings about making at all, and their Sheep--er, human. Those go on the night stand, too, staring just as strongly.
Then, as if he doesn't expect Mammon to like what he made, he also sticks a black box behind the figures with a gold ribbon tied around it. Inside is a pair of gold earrings which, sure, Mammon has earrings already, but these are from Satan.
Mission accomplished, he slips out of Mammon's room as silently as he arrived, because he wouldn't be caught dead being nice to Mammon, no siree. ]
[ Hope Satan enjoys that biiiiig loud SCREAAAAAAAAM coming from Mammon's room when he wakes up an hour or so later. because he definitely does when he sees all these little faces staring at him. ]
[ On Christmas morning, Mammon and Satan will find gifts from Zelda waiting for them in front of their door. Each gift is neatly wrapped and labeled accordingly. (On the back of Satan's gift tag, Zelda has written, "Mammon, please return this to your brother. You will not enjoy it.") Two letters are also attached, one addressed to each brother, written in Zelda's pristine cursive handwriting. ]
Dearest Mammon,
Glad tidings to you on this Christmas day. In Hyrule, we celebrate a similar holiday today, when we present gifts to our friends and family in honor of our patron goddess.
I hope you will enjoy this gift. Likely they will have little value in a barter-based economy, but I thought you would treasure them all the same.
May the Goddess smile upon you, Zelda, Princess of Hyrule
[ Yes, "treasure" was an intentional pun. Inside Mammon's gift, he will find a leather bag about the size of a pumpkin, which is full to bursting with glittering gems: green, blue, red, and purple. Zelda has declined to explain that these are rupees, the currency of Hyrule. All totaled, the bag holds approximately ten thousand rupees (in monetary value, not individual gems). Since Reverein doesn't use minted currency, Zelda also hasn't bothered to write down how much money she is giving Mammon. ]
[ Sometime after his and Mammon's arrival back to Reverein, Satan still hasn't properly processed things. He's tried to. But he thinks about it, about how both people he's made pacts with are hurdling toward non-existence in different ways, and the wrath inside his very core boils.
He knows that while he's here, he's helpless to do anything about his first pact. He knows that, but knowing that doesn't make him any less irritated. As for his second pact... what can he do? Physically restrain her from becoming an eternal light dragon that's not even Zelda anymore? Sure, maybe he could, but she would never forgive him for that, and honestly he wouldn't forgive himself either.
He had become so used to things being solvable, even if it took some time and effort. But both of these problems seem impossible for him to tackle at all.
Right now, he's skimming a book he'd come across in an effort to get his mind off things. He's retaining absolutely nothing and instead keeps thinking again and again how solutions are so far out of reach and--and there goes the book, thrown across the room so hard it's stuck in the wall like a dart on the dartboard. ]
DAMMIT!
[ He takes a moment to calm himself down, to take a deep breath, to find his peace, only to find himself kicking over the nearby table for good measure as well. ]
[ It was hard for him to get readjusted here, especially with all the ridiculous going on around them, but they managed to find their previous home still in tact and because they deal with crazy demonic things all the time it wasn't going to scare them from their dream home.
Mammon knew something had to be up since returning here though. He didn't want to pressure Satan into talking about it, maybe it was something he wanted to solve on his own, or maybe it was just something that ain't a big deal until it's brought up by someone else. Either way he wanted to keep an eye out on Satan.
Aaaand apparently that was a good idea on his part because he almost got a book lodged right into his head as hew as walking out of the room. He lets out a surprised yelp and stumbles backwards. ]
[ Luckily, there is nothing else within arm reach that he can grab and throw. Unluckily, he can just create more things to throw with magic if he wants to. He doesn't, but he's not that far away from doing it. ]
